The Public Evaluates Obama

According a recent Gallup Poll the American people approve of most of what President Obama has done thus far, with the noteworthy exceptions of closing the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay and repealing the Mexico City Policy, which governs American funding of international family planning groups.

I would love to know what those against closing Guantanamo Bay (yourself included???? not sure how you feel) would have us do otherwise. Would the plan be to leave those there that we have no evidence against for perpetuity? Would any of them ever be convicted of a crime? Do we plan on keeping it open for 70 years until the oldest person currently there dies? Would we continue to add prisoners??

Just because it is closed does not mean those deemed dangerous walk the streets. I don't see how people don't get that. Of course there will be some recidivism (even for those who were possibly innocent originally). The recidivism rate in the U.S. is just over 60%. I'm not sure why we would expect much different from those who we have caged and treated like animals in Guantanamo.

And...yes...I am completely aware that some there are vile, disgusting human beings. And I hope that those prisoners never see the light of day. But there are others...maybe many...who will never be charged with any crime b/c, as much as it may suck, they didn't commit a crime.
